Commerce Is Not the Backup Plan: Careers After I.Com in Pakistan
Karachi runs on finance, trade and audit — and I.Com is the direct entry into all three. A realistic map of qualifications, timelines and what each route demands.

Commerce carries an unfair reputation in Pakistani schools as the group you take when science does not work out. That reputation does not survive contact with Karachi's job market, where banking, audit, corporate finance, taxation, supply chain and trade employ at scale and hire directly from commerce backgrounds.
Here is what the routes actually look like, including the parts that are hard.
Route one: chartered accountancy
CA in Pakistan is administered by ICAP and is one of the most demanding professional qualifications available after Intermediate. Students typically enter after I.Com or A-Levels, complete foundational examinations, then a training contract with an approved firm alongside further papers.
- Demands: several years of study combined with full-time training, high exam attrition, and long hours during audit season.
- Rewards: a qualification with strong recognition across Pakistan and internationally, and a career ceiling well above most alternatives.
- Fit test: you tolerate detail, deadlines and repeated examination. If exams drain you, look at the other routes first.
Route two: ACCA
ACCA is a UK-based accountancy qualification widely accepted in Pakistan, often taken alongside or instead of a degree. It is modular, so progress is flexible, and many students begin during Intermediate.
- Demands: exam fees add up, and the flexibility that helps disciplined students hurts those who need structure.
- Rewards: portability across borders, and strong demand in Karachi's shared-service and multinational finance functions.
Route three: BBA and BS Accounting & Finance
The university route through IBA, KU, SZABIST, IoBM and similar institutions leads into corporate finance, marketing, human resources, consulting and management trainee programmes.
- Demands: admissions tests, fees at private institutions, and a job market that rewards internships heavily. Start applying for internships in your second year, not your final one.
- Rewards: breadth. A BBA keeps far more career doors open than most people assume, including entrepreneurship and public sector work.
Route four: economics, actuarial science and data
The quantitative side of commerce is the fastest-growing and least crowded. Economics degrees lead into research, policy and development sector work. Actuarial science, though small in Pakistan, is well paid and severely undersupplied. Data analysis roles in banks and telecoms increasingly hire from commerce backgrounds with strong spreadsheet and SQL skills.
If you took Mathematics with commerce, protect it. It is the difference between the crowded routes and the uncrowded ones.
Route five: law, CSS and public policy
Commerce students are well placed for corporate and tax law, and for CSS, where economics, accountancy and business administration are all optional subjects. The writing habit matters more than the group here.
What to do while still in Class 11 and 12
- 1Learn spreadsheets properly — formulas, lookups, pivot tables. It is the most immediately employable skill on this list.
- 2Read one business newspaper section a week and write three sentences on what changed and why.
- 3Do one small real-world exercise: keep the books for a family business, a school society or a small shop for a month.
- 4Sit any accessible competition — business plan, case study, olympiad — for a verifiable line on your CV.
An honest caution
Commerce routes reward persistence more than brilliance, and several of them, CA in particular, have high dropout rates. Choose the route that matches how you actually work, not the one with the most impressive name at a family gathering. A completed ACCA beats an abandoned CA every time.
